If you consistently hit big pull slices with your golf swing, then you are in need of a cure for coming over the top.
A pull slice is a direct result of attacking the ball from a swing path that is too far outside your target line. Have a look at the diagram below that discusses swing path.
As you can see, if the clubface is square the the target line, but you attack the ball from outside/in, then you will create slice spin.
However, it gets worse. Most golfers who attack the ball from over the top will have the clubface OPEN to the swing path. This creates even more slice spin, and the result is a bigger slice.
The reason this happens is that the body compensates for coming over the top by keeping the club face open at impact. If you actually released the club properly while coming over the top, you’d simply smother the ball low and left (for a right handed player).
One way this compensation occurs is with the chicken wing of the lead arm in the follow through.
Notice the bent left arm halfway through the follow through. This is how the golfer compensates for coming over the top with their golf swing as it keeps the club from releasing properly.
Another way the body compensates is that the golfer loses their posture in the swing, and they end up standing tall, or even on their toes at impact, especially with the driver. This allows them to still make contact with the ball, rather than hitting on the hosel with a dead pull.
The cure for coming over the top
So, what is the cure for coming over the top? Hank Haney has a nice 5 minute quick fix you can try out if you don’t have the time to really improve your golf swing.
I’ve seen that fix work immediately with my own students and in watching Hank work with golfers himself. However, unless the golfer then continues on to work on longer term fixes, they often revert back to their old swing.
To really fix your over the top golf swing, you’ll need to understand this key concept… the Kinematic golf sequence.
Once you understand that there is a proper sequence to the golf swing, you’ll need to work on improving yours.
This will take time and effort. I explain everything you’ll need to do here… Proper Golf Swing Sequence. I break down the process step by step, and how to get used to moving the body properly without a golf club in your hand.
If you work on this routine daily for 10 or 15 minutes, you should be able to start doing it with a club in your hand. I recommend you do slow motion golf swings as often as possible as well to train your muscles.
If you still struggle with making these improvements, you may have some physical issues that you’ll need to deal with in order to make the proper changes.
Ultimately, it is not impossible to fix the over the top golf swing. It just takes practice, determination and patience.
In the end, while you may get frustrated it times, look at the bright side… being on the golf course or driving range practicing the game you love is a great place to be!
